The Western Pennsylvania History Magazine is the official quarterly publication of the Heinz History Center.
We designed several features for the Western Pennsylvania History Magazine. To do so, we read through each article, analyze the provided photography, and create a visual theme throughout each feature that is appropriate for the timeframe and the story being told.

Punks Wanted
Written by Mike Shankley, this featured article from the Spring 2025 edition of the Western Pennsylvania History Magazine focuses on the history of the Shut-Ins, Pittsburgh’s first punk band. The visual direction pulls directly from 1970s punk rock aesthetics, music magazines, concert flyers, and PGH grit.
This article won a 2025 GDUSA Publication Award.
Pittsburgh’s Hidden History
Written by Anne Madarasz and Emily Ruby, this featured article from the Summer 2025 edition of the Western Pennsylvania History Magazine focuses on an on-going exhibit at the Heinz History Center. The exhibit, called Pittsburgh’s Hidden History, explores some of the museum’s lesser-seen collections. The visual direction is inspired by classic carnival promotions, oddities, and the exhibit’s eclectic objects.
The Cigar Girls of Pittsburgh
Written by Mary Franz, this featured article from the Summer 2024 edition of the Western Pennsylvania History Magazine focuses on Pittsburgh’s history as a cigar producer in the early 1900s. The visual direction is inspired by turn-of-the-century, gilded, cigar boxes and early 1900s graphic imagery.
Jupiter’s Moons
Written by Christopher Briem, this featured article from the Fall 2024 edition of the Western Pennsylvania History Magazine focuses on historical disputes over the Pennsylvania-Virginia border. The visual direction is modern astrology and historical star charts.
